Diabetes Vs COVID-19
Story shared by Chuck R of San Diego

I am a diabetic and part of my daily routine is to get up, have breakfast then head out to exercise by walking.
Since the Shelter In Place rules started I was afraid to go out and get my exercise. I could tell my blood sugars were going up. I decided I had to win this blood sugar war or I might not have to worry about COVID-19. I headed back out walking, covering my face, gloves etc. Long before COVID I drove to places like Balboa Park, Coronado, The Embarcadero, The beaches and San Diego River walk etc, where there were wide open spaces to walk. Since they Closed Balboa Park that really put a cramp in my daily exercises. So COVID 19 changed my ability to control my diabetes like I did before. It was either going to be COVID-19 or Diabetes that killed me. Once I found that I could still walk safely along the Embarcadero and Bayside walk in Coronado, I drove to walk there on a daily basis.
Most folks in University Heights are respectful and wear face coverings and keep their distancing. My immediate social circle is very understanding and we keep in touch electronically or actually calling each other more than we did.
I am very proud to live in San Diego. I would not want to live anywhere else. San Diego is a very special place. I am Thankful I am retired. It breaks my heart to witness so many people in need of food. I have and will continue to donate to those causes. San Diego really is America’s Finest City I think.
